Celebrating 50 years of the Southern Cross Rally

History | Port Macquarie

Port Macquarie in the seventies comprised around 9000 people (2016 – almost 80000), and so the influx of the Southern Cross International Rally was quite significant to the economy of the town, and to the lives of the townspeople with the upside down timetable of the rally participants. The town certainly welcomed the event and every effort was made to accommodate its needs.  The many thousands of visitors to the rally were impressed with the area and no doubt word of mouth increased tourism in other times of the year. Many participants returned to the region for their holidays.
